Dear Friends, |
| Why I decided to run for Alderman |
Welcome to our website. Based on two and one-half years of conversations with residents, business owners, clergy, community activists, leaders and just plain folks, there is a general dissatisfaction with the quality of City Council representation for the Second Ward. |
| |
It is this dissatisfaction, combined with my own, that led me to run for Alderman of the Second Ward. It is my hope that here, you will find insight into my candidacy and those issues that we have identified as being most important to you, the stakeholders of the Second Ward. |
| "Cares about...issues" |
Second Ward residents deserve an Alderman who cares about the current and potential issues of the entire Ward. We deserve a leader who is committed to performing the tasks required of a public servant and one who is both accessible to constituents and responsive to our needs on a daily basis. As a resident and active citizen of the Ward, I could no longer be a silent observer. The time for change is now. |
| "Smart and responsible growth" |
The Second Ward is a prime example of the rapid growth and evolution of this great city. We are the melting pot of the longtime residents with the influx of newer neighbors. As such, smart and responsible growth is the key to our success. We must balance the substantial residential development of the Ward with complementary and diverse retail opportunities, while preserving the historical character of our neighborhoods. |
| "Amenities" |
From 35th & and King Drive on the South Side to Albany and Madison on the West Side, many of our neighborhoods lack basic amenities, like full-service supermarkets within a safe walking distance. Residents of this Ward desperately need and deserve a diverse array of coffee shops, restaurants, book stores and clothing stores. |
| "Transparent, and...accessible" |
Finally, our government must remain transparent, and its officials accessible. As Alderman, I will host weekly Ward nights, where residents may engage me individually. In addition, I will host bi-monthly town-hall meetings, attend community meetings, block club meetings, C.A.P.S. meetings, and Chamber of Commerce meetings. In general, I want a better quality of life for my family and for all of the citizens of the Ward. |
| "We can work together" |
As our website develops, you will find valuable information about my positions on issues most pertinent to stakeholders of the Ward. I also need your thoughts and ideas, so that we can work together to maintain and improve all of our lives. With my commitment and your support, victory is ours. |
| |
On behalf of the Askew for 2 team, thank you for your support and guidance. I look forward to serving you as the next Alderman of the greatest Ward in Chicago, the Second Ward.
